That voice you could recognize with your eyes closed. That legendary mustache. That quiet, commanding presence that somehow makes you stop and listen before he’s even finished a sentence.
And there’s something almost poetic about this: Sam shares his August 9 birthday with Smokey Bear, and he later became a voice behind Smokey’s wildfire-prevention campaigns. Of all the voices that could remind America about preventing wildfires, somehow Sam Elliott’s feels like the one that was always meant to do it.

Sam’s father worked for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and reportedly struggled to believe that acting could provide his son with a real future. Then tragedy made that disagreement permanent.
